Hi! I'm Lindsay Ferrier. You might remember me from a blog called Suburban Turmoil. Well, a lot has changed since I started that blog in 2005. My kids grew up, I got a divorce, and I finally left the suburbs for the heart of Nashville, where I feel like I truly belong. I have no idea what the future will hold and you know what? I'm okay with that. Thrilled, actually. It was time for something totally different.

If you have school age kids, you know the children’s birthday party drill all too well. As soon as you put your kid in preschool, the invitations come hard and heavy, one after another after another after another. We’ve talked here before about the awkwardness of the party itself (Remember my most awkward kids birthday party moment EVER?), but one thing we haven’t covered is the gift.
I like to be prepared for parties, and try to keep age-appropriate gifts on hand– but you should know that this has only come after YEARS of trial and error. I have been the stepmom who stuffed a ten or a twenty (depending on the degree of friendship) into a birthday card envelope and sheepishly handed it to the host. I have been the mom stopping by Toys R Us for a gift and a gift bag and tissue paper and a card, mere minutes before the party began. And I have been the mom who didn’t even have time to make it to Toys R Us before the start of the party, and had to resort to whatever the corner drugstore had to offer.
NO MORE, I say. NO MORE.
Those awful memories have helped me to be a little more prepared when it comes to parties, and I’ve bought enough presents over the years that I know now which ones will be sure-fire hits. Here are a few of my favorites:
At $14.99 on Amazon, this gift is a great bargain. The kid will have to send off for the butterflies, yes, but Insect Lore now lets you do that online, which saves time– and trust me, this gift is worth the wait. The kids and I did this a few years ago and absolutely loved it– and every single one of our caterpillars hatched! You can also opt for the Ant Hill or a number of other bug-growing kits- Anything from Insect Lore is fabulous and educational and super fun for everybody.
And then there are Sea-Monkeys! Who doesn’t love Sea-Monkeys?! You can get a deluxe kit like this one for around $20 at Toys R Us and it makes a great present for a boy or girl- Chances are the parents will remember them from childhood and be pretty pleased, too.
Operation is always a safe bet when you have no idea what the kid will be into. We’ve bought this gift for others several times– I love it because both boys and girls love it, parents will have fun playing it again, and it helps with fine motor skills. It’s also under $20, which is nice. Just be sure and buy batteries- They’re not included with the game.
One of my all-time favorite gift ideas has to be this book, Papertoy Monsters. It’s under $12 on Amazon (I’ve also recently seen it at Michael’s) and it’s filled with 50 awesome, fairly easy to put together paper monsters. My son is IN LOVE with this book, and now has a collection of hilarious paper monster creations that we add to all the time.
LEGO sets are always a safe bet. Most of you know this to be true for boys, but did you know the new LEGO Friends sets for girls are just as fun? Every girl we’ve bought a set for has LOVED them– This particular “Olivia’s Tree House” set is $21.99.
Oh my gosh, Perplexus is RIDICULOUSLY fun. Available for all skill levels from about five years of age on, it’s basically an unbelievably elaborate obstacle course inside a plastic ball. My son got one recently and I became obsessed with it until I solved it. It took me HOURS, y’all. It’s such an ingenious toy- You will be amazed. Perplexus is fun, educational, and best of all, the whole family can enjoy. Most Perplexus balls are between $15 and $20.
You can’t go wrong with an art jar. I got one on sale, put it away, and pulled it out on a boring rainy day- The kids stayed busy making things for the rest of the day, and they still dip into it for supplies on a regular basis. I’ve begun refilling ours with odds and ends. Art jars are always at Toys R Us and Michael’s and generally run between $10 and $20, making them a perfect party gift. They’re big, too, so the birthday kid will be thrilled.
Got any great ideas of your own? I’d love to hear them!

Brilliant suggestions. We recently hired a professional organizer who helped us clean out our basement and one of the things I asked for was a “gift closet” of the kind I had growing up. There was always something useful there that could be given at the last minute. I’m also a big fan of old fashioned classics, like marbles (for older kids, of course), Slinkies, and some “new classic” board games like Quirkle (very fun and challenging for all ages) and Blokus. We use Amazon Prime, so if I remember to order the gift the day I get the invitation we’re ahead of the game. Sometimes I still get caught in the “day of” trap, but it’s fun to go to toy stores, so it’s not the worst thing ever 🙂
 Love those ideas!
I don’t mind going to the toy store at the last minute IF I know exactly what I’m looking for. What I hate is going at the last minute and wandering aimlessly with no clue of what to buy.
Is it evil that I don’t want to share this wonderful post with my friends because we go to the same kids’ birthday parties and I want to keep all the ideas to myself? 😉Â
Ha! That’s where the gift receipt comes in handy…
excellent suggestions!! Thanks a million– I think the perplexus is going to be a big hit with my son’s friends– who are 7/8/9 years old. Â I may have to buy one for my son as well….
You’ll love it just as much as they will! 🙂
These are great! Does anyone have any good ideas for outdoor toys?Â
Not sure if they still have these, but a few years back both my girls would give an over the door roll (or you could use it table top) that contained large pictures to color. I think you could buy refill coloring rolls. It had crayons and markers with it. We got a set for them, and the loved it so much that we started giving it as a gift. It was around $15, so it was reasonable and generally about a week after the gift was given the mom would pull me aside and ask about it, because their child loved it! I was sorry when the outgrew this! I don’t recall the name but I remember seeing it at Walmart, Target and Toys r Us.
I’m a little surprised you worded the Lego part the way you did. I’ve always thought of Legos as safe bets for girls too. It sounds like you’re saying to buy the girl-theme sets for girls, but every girl I know who loves Legos loved the same sets that boys played with. Part of the problem I think is that the girl-theme sets are only a tiny portion of Lego’s offerings, and most of them are stereotypical “girl” stuff, like horses, pets, beauty, cooking, and plenty of pink and pastel.
Totally agree!
I’m sure there are girls who enjoy the non girl theme LEGO sets, but I wouldn’t recommend that people buy them for a girl’s birthday party unless she’s specifically expressed interest in that particular LEGO set. I actually think more girls would be interested in the other sets if they included more girl characters. Most of them have only one or two girl figures, which is not enough to capture most girls’ interest.
That said, I’ve found the girl-themed sets are just as fun and intricate to put together as the others, and if you know of a girl who’s interested in horses, pets, beauty, and plenty of pink and pastel (as many girls are, whether we like it or not), it’s a great gift idea.
I love the idea of a fort kit! I got one for my Godson this year (yes, I know they are easy to make on their own, but all wrapped up in a package just gets kids excited). A couple of matching sheets, some clothes pins, a flashlight, maybe some snacks. Perfect!
I just came back for this post! Our neighbor is turning 7 and has “everything”! So this was really helpful, thanks!!!
Have you ever played Spot It? It’s only 12 bucks and virtually everyone who plays it, man, child, boy, girl, falls in love. It’s essentially a super fast matching game but that makes it sound so much less than it is. For an easy present that’s guaranteed to be a hit, check out this game. You can get it on Amazon.
