Hi! I'm Lindsay Ferrier. You might remember me from a blog called Suburban Turmoil. Well, a lot has changed since I started that blog in 2005. My kids grew up, I got a divorce, and I finally left the suburbs for the heart of Nashville, where I feel like I truly belong. I have no idea what the future will hold and you know what? I'm okay with that. Thrilled, actually. It was time for something totally different.

Here at the Ferrier house, we have ourselves a challenge.
It is a fitness challenge, designed to bribe, I mean, help everyone to get in shape. Whoever racks up the most minutes of workouts each month gets a fifteen-dollar iTunes card.
So far, I’m winning. Of course I’m winning. I’m the most competitive bitch I know. I already have thirty dollars in iTunes cards from Christmas and if I want a fifteen dollar iTunes card, well I can buy one. But that doesn’t matter.
I MUST WIN THE FERRIER FITNESS CHALLENGE!
And so I push myself to go a few extra minutes every time I work out. And I go to the gym even on the days I don’t really feel like it. And I dream of the day when that iTunes card WILL BE MINE!!!!!! ALL MINE!!!!!!!!
“Hmm, 30 minutes,” I read on our family calendar a few days after our fitness challenge had begun.
“That’s good,” I told my 18-year-old stepdaughter, who had logged the 30 minutes in question.
“But not good enough.”
Smirking, I wrote my initial and a 45 behind it.
The next day, I added 48 to my count. And two days after that, 49.
The rest of the family? Big fat zero. Oh yes. I’m winning, all right. This is like, the best challenge EVER.
You might try something like this with your family. Maybe it will inspire your husband and children to get fit. Or maybe, as in my case, it will inspire no one but you. If you think the latter may be the case, I urge you to choose a more personal monthly prize, like a 90-minute massage, for example, or a hundred dollar haircut.
Hey. We’re moms. We make it work. Or in my case, work out.
