Fryce Cream: Scrumptious Ice Cream and French Fries in Nashville

In a city where dining out now means being charged $200 a head for doll-sized plates of freeze-dried zucchini and macerated eel belly, I find myself longing for simpler times and simpler meals. And lo! My wish has been granted. I’ve discovered a place that takes two of our nation’s least complicated and most beloved dishes and puts them together, with unexpectedly magical results.

 

That place is called Fryce Cream.

You’ll find Fryce Cream in the heart of Nashville’s 12 South neighborhood, a hip shopping district favored by the kinds of tourists who are eager to drop $300 on a designer pair of ripped jorts. The menu here is simple:

 

There are french fries.

 

And there is ice cream.

 

The french fries are hot, crunchy, and completely addictive, and they come with a whole bunch of dusting options, like garlic herb and birria, and dips like gochugaru bbq and sweet-n-sour pickle. If I’m honest, I need to let you know that french fries are my all-time favorite food, so the fries alone were all it took to put Fryce Cream high on my list of places to visit.

Add the homemade soft serve ice cream, though, and suddenly my kids are on board for a visit. Choose from vanilla, chocolate, or a swirl for those who can’t decide between the two, and add on toppings like fresh strawberries, milk chocolate pretzels, sprinkles, and chocolate fudge truffle. This ice cream is far more delicious than your typical soft-serve. It is rich and creamy and full of yum.

 

You can order JUST fries or JUST ice cream here, but locals know that the best way to do it is to order both — and try them together.

It’s true. Most people order the french fries and ice cream combo — and then dip the fries in the ice cream. We were also advised to order the swirl ice cream, because customers swear that the french fry dusts hit different in chocolate versus vanilla.

I was dubious. I have to admit it. I would have been perfectly happy to enjoy my french fries and ice cream separately. But I’m nothing if not adventurous when it comes to food, and so I did it. I dipped one garlic herb-dusted french fry into my ice cream.

It was…

WONDERFUL.

It was actually completely addictive. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I’m now a Fryce Cream fan for life.

 

And I’m not alone. Fryce Cream started out here as a weekend gig — The space was used for other concepts during the week. But the fries n’ ice cream combo has proved to be so popular that chef Jeremy Barlow (remember Tayst? He did that.) recently made the decision to open Fryce Cream five days a week.  You can now satisfy what will soon be your french fries-dipped-in-ice cream addiction Wednesdays through Saturdays from 12pm to 8pm and Sundays from 12pm to 6pm.

 

Order at the window, or dine inside — The choice is yours. I suggest you add Fryce Cream to your list of things to do this summer, and pair it with an afternoon of shopping for the perfect pair of $300 jorts on 12 South.

 

A few local beers are also on the menu. I haven’t dipped my fries in beer yet, but I’ll let you know what I think if and when it happens.
