And while we’re on the subject of advice, we’re getting a new family desktop soon. What do you think I should (or shouldn’t) get? Part of me screams, “Get an Apple!!” because I have a Macbook and I love it. But part of me thinks we should have at least one PC in the house, because there are certain programs that just won’t run on a Mac. And if we get a PC, I have no idea of what we should get. It needs to be affordable and it needs to not break. Those two things are very important to me. Any ideas?

I have both (my PC laptop is my work computer — thanks, boss) and there’s no comparison. My brand-spankin’ new iMac is pretty much the coolest thing ever.

You really can run PC programs on the mac by using bootcamp or parallel (but have to buy the XP software). I now have a Macbook Pro, Powerbook, and an iMac and haven’t looked back. I was sorely tempted to get the macbook air but I decided to wait a few generations. Get a Mac! Please! Seriously, get a mac.

Any developer too cheap to format it for OS isn’t worth the money anyway.As far as the post, I guess it depends on why you have this blog? To make people happy or to be yourself? Hmmmm. My philosophy is if you’re not pissing someone off, you aren’t doing it right.

I’m totally a PC person but Vista is a nightmare… I’ve always been an HP person and I’ve heard fabulous things about Dell… I would recommend either of those two for a PC, but do whatever you can to avoid Vista. I’m working on downgrading to XP myself (I wish my husband where a tech guy and do this for me). Nearly everyday I want to slam my laptop against a wall HARD, and I wish I hadn’t been so happy for the latest and greatest with Vista last spring when I got a laptop. My HP desktop (I’m on my third) has been great.

I was worried that we’d get a Mac and regret it later, but it’s good to know so many of you are happy with yours.As for the expense of Macs, with our PC computers (we have a ’97 desktop and the older girls each have PC laptops), I have to have our computer guy come out every six months or so (for about $100 each visit) and clean out/fix small problems witht hem . With the Mac, I’ve had no problems/slowdowns/viruses whatsoever except for the battery crapping out (3 DAYS before the warranty expired! Woo hoo!), so I figure I would be saving a lot of money that I would ordinarily be spending on him.

Like mrs. n says, Vista is evil.Unless you have a very specific need for a PC, I’d stick with Macs. I don’t know the details, but you can run PC software on a Mac. This ability has been available in some form or another for about 20 years. Check it out.
