The Halfway Point

  1. Tracy Wisneski says:

So bawling my eyes out right now!!! My baby girl (my youngest child) is now a very mature 16 1/2, attending community college, working part time, driving a Jeep and blowing my mind all the time! She’s taller than I am and I learned long ago that her soul must be older than mine! But, guess, what? She asked me to braid her hair again this morning before she left for work!

You sound like a wonderful mama with an outstanding baby girl who will grow to be your best friend! Give her a few years for the beeswax and soon she’ll be telling you more than you’re ready to know!

    Here’s my “baby” now:

This is so beautiful it made me cry. At work.

  3. Now I’m ugly crying. My little girl will be nine in November and I can’t take it!!!!

  4. Beautiful! She will adore this always.

  5. Laura Cooper says:

That was a two-hanky post. But the “personal beeswax” phrase is hysterical!

  6. boricua_keya says:

You wrote this on purpose so I could cry. Didnt you?! I told you these always get me. You know its over when they start getting beeswax.

  7. muskrat says:

When my girl turned 6 last year, I thought, “Holy crap…she’s 1/3 of the way out of my house.” So, I get the sadness at 9.

  8. Rachel M. says:

Awwww, this was so sweet. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Isnt it strange how big 9 years feels?!!?! I feel like Grace is SO grown up — like the moment she turned 9, she grew up years!! I wrote a letter to her too this week — just amazing how they grow during that 8th year.

But looking at both our girls — the confidence and way they are learning to navigate the world —- so cool to see.

  10. […] – “…this birthday marks the halfway point of your childhood. Nine years have whizzed by– nine years of playgroups and picture books, dolls and songs, snuggling and walks in the woods. In just nine more years, you’ll be preparing to graduate from high school, and go on to college, and start life as an adult. And I’m sorry, Punky, but that that’s just not enough time. I need more time.” – The Halfway Point […]

My little girl will be nine in 3 days.mshes been counting down for the last two weeks. She is so excited. I can hardly stand it. I always write her a birthday letter, yours is beautiful. It brought to mind so many things I didn’t remember or even realize. Thank you!

  12. Becca says:

Umm I’m a bit of a mess reading this – my little girl is only four but I cant even handle thinking she might be nine soon! I love this letter and your heart and your adorable girl!

  13. mcdonnellism says:

Well, that was emotionally crushing. What a beautiful, lucky girl you have – what a gorgeous, eloquent, loving mama she has. Thanks for sharing your heart with us. 🙂

  14. Ok friend, totally ugly cried through all of this. Yesterday my youngest turned 11 and I kept thinking…there’s just not enough time. My 2 older ones are 15 and 16 and I think the same thing with every milestone. My oldest is learning to drive and talking college…be still my heart. You have so beautifully expressed my heart in your words here. Thanks so much for sharing! Blessings!

  15. Tina Francis says:

    Personal beeswax. Golden!

And this, “Girl, you honked and scraped the ground like nobody’s business!”

    So good. Hahaha.

Wow. Big transitions. What a difference a year makes! She seems to be quite a radical, intelligent, fascinating little girl

    You did good Mama!!!

    Hugs,
    Teen

Having gone through (and survived) this twice, I can assure you that around 20 the circle closes. They’ve found their wings and left the nest. They’ve had their hearts broken, they’ve learned to heal. They’ve explored the world and found that although the world is an amazing place with lots to teach us, there is nothing like the loving arms of Momma (used to be Mommy, but thankfully, never Mom 😉 ) and Daddy. That’s when they come back to you for hugs, kisses, consolation, and encouragement. They never really leave us. They just come back to us stronger, smarter, and wonderful adults.

  17. Nancy says:

Such beautiful sentiments! I can really see how she’s grown up in the last picture. It’s tough but they will always be our loves and no matter what she may say in a fit of independence it’s just her testing those wings you’ve given her. “There are two gifts we should give our children; one is roots and the other is wings”. And you are doing such an amazing job with both.

My 8 year old daughter is now 8-1/2 and I feel your pain. Every bit of it. Worse still is my first baby girl turns 21 on Friday. I don’t know how that happened. Thank you for sharing this.
