Hi! I'm Lindsay Ferrier. You might remember me from a blog called Suburban Turmoil. Well, a lot has changed since I started that blog in 2005. My kids grew up, I got a divorce, and I finally left the suburbs for the heart of Nashville, where I feel like I truly belong. I have no idea what the future will hold and you know what? I'm okay with that. Thrilled, actually. It was time for something totally different.

>Awww, look. It’s our very first Backtalk controversy.
This week’s Backtalk is about the recession and how moms are dealing with it. I thought it would be a great opportunity for the Backtalk moms to discuss some of the best deal-saving, frugal-focused mom blogs out there. We discussed a whole bunch of pros and a few minor cons of some of the sites.
And some mom bloggers weren’t very happy about it. Check out the comments for details.
And yes, ordinarily, I’d have something “exclusive” posted over here today, but it’s been that kind of month. My strep throat has come back and I’m taking Bruiser to the doctor this afternoon for a suspected ear infection.
Yes, Mom, you told me so.
*sigh*

>Oh no!! I wonder if they can give you some sort of super-shot for the strep. Poor Bruiser! Between a sick Momma & a sick baby there will be no fun in your house this weekend … unless you count drowning the house in lysol as fun. Which I don't. Off to read what new crap-storm you started this time! LOL
>I live in Beaverton Oregon, and I can easily find buns and eggs for the prices mentioned…you have to shop at the bag-your-own-groceries-place- but it’s not a challenge. However, people are being too sensitive (What!!! Women being overly sensitive and frieking out over tiny things… never!)if they took the comments to be derogatory. And yes, making your own maxi pads can not possibly be worth the $$ you are saving… although I have seen reusable ones.. but that is another topic altogether…
>Oh my. We had the lingering sick from Mid Feb-Mid Mar. My pedi told me to put my 2 year old on Flintstones Complete vitamins (half a tablet for a two year old). Sounds hokey, but honestly my son has not been sick since. KNOCK ON WOOD.Feel better.
>I am very sorry to hear you’re both under the weather. What a rotten way to begin the weekend. Make usre you toss out the toothbrushes as the strep can live in there and re-infect you (or so I’ve been told. No idea if it’s true). As for the controversy… it’s probably good for business/traffic?
>RIDICULOUS is what I think! I save money by giving it to the “man”; that would be Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. We save over $100 a month by just getting diapers and formula there.
>I think there’s something to be said for the fact that many of the deal-saving websites involve special trips to Walmart or Aldis. I love shopping at both places, but they’re so far away that with two small children, I just can’t do it. I’m waaaaay more into coupon clipping and keeping up with the deals at my local supermarket. And I’m lucky if the buns there are $.99! 😀
>I have discovered that when I take my coupons to WinCo, I always find a store brand item that is cheaper than the original item would have been even after the coupon. I have friends that spend hours clipping and going from place to place to use those coupons and are thrilled that they “saved” $100 on their groceries… the fact is the prices at the regular stores are so inflated to begin with , that I can just go to WinCo, without coupons, and save $175 without all the hassle (except the bagging my own groceries thing).I know it isn’t for everyone or conveniently located for everyone, but dang, last week… 10 bags of groceries, plus milk… under $200! It just kills me now to pay what they are asking at Alberstons and Safeway. That being said- I am a total cheapskate anyway… so yeah-
>I hear ya, my little 9 month old guy has an ear infection and “tummy troubles” from the antibiotics.Hang in there!DanielleMN
>I think it’s a good thing to show some skepticism when people are making their own maxi pads, washing their hair with baking soda, or when you’re not able to find groceries as cheaply as us SW Ohio moms (5dollarmeals is written in my region). I like to use cellfire or shortcuts to put coupons on my Kroger card and then maybe print a few coupons doing these things in moderation keeps me sane and saved me about $65 at Kroger yesterday. I could have saved more, but at what cost. I suck at the “CVS game,” am not willing to buy all my clothes at goodwill, nor will I go to the bread outlet on the shady side of Dayton to get a deal. This is like anything else moms do, moderation and finding what works best for you is always key. Anywho, I hope you and Bruiser get feeling better. Be Well~H
>I didn’t feel like registering on the linked site to post a comment, but I have an awesome way to save a bit of money, give some extra room in those bathroom cabinets, AND is better for your health. I’m talking about the Dive Cup (http://www.divacup.com/). It is amazing, and if you can get over some initial “ick” factor, it is truly amazing. I have used mine for 3+ years now and I will never ever wear a tampon or pad ever again! Anyway, worth looking into. I’ve recommended them to many people, and all who have made the switch love it.
>Wow, I hope you feel better. I also hope the whiners put on their big girl panties and deal with things. Why are people so super sensitive? Everybody is struggling, everybody has their ways of coping. If you don’t like something, TURN IT OFF OR QUIT READING IT. Your blog is fab!
>Everyone finds their own way to economize. I don’t clip coupons much because there is hardly anything I would put in my mouth that there is a coupon for. I just don’t eat processed foods, and the foods that are couponed the most are also the most processed. So that isn’t an idea that would work for my family. But I do ONLY shop the perimeter of the store and I only cook from scratch, which saves me a tremendous amount of money. I know other people don’t have the time or the skills to cook everything from scratch, but that’s what works for my family. Also, cutting out ALL junk food… it will cut your food budget considerably. If you are junk food junkies and need that salt and the soda, than that idea won’t work for you, but it’s been a godsend for us. I don’t watch those video series (Backtalk or Momversations) because I’m kind of tired of seeing the same few people express their opinions ad nauseum. Finding bloggers people DON’T know, interviewing people who actually are writing blogs on the topic… what would be much more interesting in relevant. And WHY was the always smug Maggie Mason on this blog. Her content was worthless. She said nothing. What was the point of her piece? I just don’t get it.
>Margalit, I did the Maggie Mason interview because we were both at Mom 2.0 and she had something to say about the recession. Boom. I got out the camera.I’m trying to feature a diverse mix of women on Backtalk- some that are well-known, some that aren’t well-known at all.You can actually help by suggesting blogs and links for upcoming shows. We call for videos and links for upcoming Backtalks on the site two or three times a week, and I have yet to see you make any suggestions….
>I shop at a super walmart, i have done comparrioson shopping so i know i am saving 2-3 dollars on some items…i don’t live in a big place like Beaverton,( it’s close to portland,eh?) so my shopping is very limited, i would shop win-co too, if i had one closer than 2 hours away. I shop cash and carry, where we buy meat in bulk and then repackage it…i mean we buy rib roasts and cut them into steaks, you are saving about 5 bucks a pound that way so you can shop for decent food at good prices if you want, i can drive all over my entire town inlike 15 minutes so it doesn’t take a lot of gas that some of the coupon clippers use driving from store to store, AND i always plan my route so that i make a circle and not drive back and forth wasting gas!
>Get on some proper meds for the strep, Lindsay. Take care!
>Anon: The Diva Cup scared me. Seriously. Lindsay: I hope bruiser gets better soon. As far as money saving tips go, I live in NY, but the grocery stores out here often have really kick ass sales, and I take advantage of them as often as I can.
>Well, I didn't look at BackTalk (it's a video?) but I'm chime in anyway!I have a SuperWalmart in my town of 45,000. I LOVE IT. I can save probably $25-30 by shopping there instead of Stop&Shop or Shaws. I shop there once a week and if I have to pick something up it's only 1.5 miles so it's no big deal. I do go to S&S or our local produce store for fruits and vegetables because usually they look a little fresher and have a better supply.I clip coupons but only for things I use regularly.Yes, get rid of your toothbrush if you haven't already!! You will re-infect yourself from it. Happened to my son.Poor things — feel better soon!
