Hi! I'm Lindsay Ferrier. You might remember me from a blog called Suburban Turmoil. Well, a lot has changed since I started that blog in 2005. My kids grew up, I got a divorce, and I finally left the suburbs for the heart of Nashville, where I feel like I truly belong. I have no idea what the future will hold and you know what? I'm okay with that. Thrilled, actually. It was time for something totally different.
June 6, 2007
>…my 32nd birthday is tomorrow and I’m feeling a little blah. I have to admit that this is the first birthday I haven’t been looking forward to.
Now I know a lot of you are older than I am and you’re all, “Damn, girl, I’d be happy to be 32 again! Get over yourself!” (my husband being one of you), but think back to that first birthday that you didn’t look forward to, if you’ve even had one of those yet. For a lot of people, it’s 30, but I actually was excited about that one because I felt like I’d finally start being taken seriously. 31 seemed like I was just barely in my 30s and so new to the decade that it hardly even counted. But 32? It’s like saying, You know what, Lindsay? You are absolutely mired in your thirties now and there’s no going back. You are a thirtysomething. Deal with it.
So help take my mind off this crap (and this crap, which makes me sad). Give me a topic to write about in the comments and I’ll choose my favorite and post on it. It can be about anything, I don’t care. Inspire me.

>HiFrom a long-time lurker – many miles away both in geography and lifestyle, but I love your writing!I am a fair bit older than you, but still feel like I’m 18 (apart fro the creaky joints, grey hair and, umm, ‘laughter lines’). I check out guys 10 years younger, because, for the last 8 years, they’re only a couple of years younger than me – I forget that every year I add another digit. Here’s a topic: Age is just a label – and they can be removed. And thanks for such an entertaining blog.D
>Happy early birthday! I turned 33 this year and I have been pondering this thought:As a thirtysomething single gal in the city, how does the dating thing work when you are the last single gal in your group? Do the smug marrieds that you spend time with really understand what your life as a single gal is like? And the age old question, where do you find nice, decent, mature single men (in Nashville)?
>My (35 year old) motto…Better to get another year older than the alternative.Have a great birthday. I really enjoy your blog.
>hmm….topic?how is it for you being a stepmom to teenage daughters/what is your relationship with them like compared to like thier “real” mom?
>Happy birthday-to-be! Wow, we’re the same age. Well, you’re a tad bit older than I am. I’ll be 32 in September. I completely understand the ambivalence. Oh, well, at least you’ll always be older than I am! :::runs away::::
>”Don’t ever regret growing older, It’s a privilege denied to many”.Nuff said….;)
>Midget porn.
>My father said if I got my hair cut, it would take 5-10 years off my face. I did it, and now I’m being ma’am-ed left and right. At what age do you become a ma’am? Is age irrelevant – is it just a polite title?
>How about you just have a ton of birthday cocktails and then write the first thing that pops in to your mind. That would probably make for some fine entertainment.Or how about Lindsay now vs. Lindsay then. We’ll of course need lots of photos of 80’s Lindsay. Especially one’s where you might have donned parachute pants or worn fluorescent clothing.
>Wow, you are old. I don’t turn 32 for another few months :-).I’ve been a lurker for a few months and wanted to say hi. I recently moved to the Nashville area and found your blog while researching area Playgroups (loved your Green Hills playgroup story)Its a nice guilty pleasure that I look forward to every day
>Related to ma’am…How will you be teaching Punky and eventually bruiser to address adults, (your contemporaries)? My 4 yo knows to call everyone except her preschool faculty (who are Miss Firstname), Mr. & Mrs. or Dr. Smith unless they raise holy hell about me making them feel old and violently insist on being Miss Firstname despite being my daughters friend’s mom. While I never correct one of her contemporaries for not calling me Dr. Vader (I am often addressed as Daughtersname’s Dad rather than Mr. Vader or even Mr./Dr. Darth).I just wonder how other Gen Xer’s are handling their children addressing adults.
>I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this article.
>34 i want more.you could write about tube socks or ankle socks or those socks with the little pompoms on the back of them. i know this sounds facitious, but socks COULD be interesting in the right hands….
>Happy Birthday!
>How about a post defending your guilty pleasures. The only way to get out of a funk is with a little humor. You know what they say, “forty is the new thirty,” my husband likes to bug me and say when we turn forty the new saying will be “forty the new fifty.”
>Veronica -Wow, that article was really interesting. I want to kiss the ground of the good old USA!Lindsay – Wait until you get the call for your 20th high school reunion. Talk about feeling old! Luckily (I think) I’ll be on vacation so I’ll miss it. I think you should write about something you do with your kids that is unique to Nashville. As an out-of-town reader, I’d be interested.
>How was u as a athlete, Lucinda? Tell us about your life and times in the pits.
>Hey! You have the same birthday as my wife. Cool. Happy early birthday!P.S. Is it any wonder why I love BusyMom? I’ll second the midget porn idea.
>Hey! I’m sort of copying metrodad with…you have the same birthday as my husband!LOL!Midget porn, definitely midget porn. Hee-hee, I think B-Mo’s trying to get your site spammed. 😉
>HEY! It’s MY birthday tomorrow TOO! Happy birthday fellow breastfeeding June 7ther!!!
>Hey, fellow Gemini, I’m June 11, but I’ve got six years on you.Damn girl!!and Happy Birthday. Some birthdays are just melancholy. It’s hard being a mom of two little ones and having a birthday, epsecially when the birthday falls on a weekday and you don’t get a break.Post on this: In an alternate universe, if you weren’t married with four kids, what would you be doing right now?I’m watching Family Man on VHS while I’m (cough, cough) cleaning the house.Tomorrow I fly to a conference where I’ll see people that I haven’t seen in seven years and I will pretend like I haven’t been in an alternate universe for the past seven years. I don’t think I’ll fool them too much, but I really don’t care very much. That’s the good part.
>Happy 32nd birthday! You look great girl! #40 was hard for me.Topic: international adoption and the long painful wait to finally be a mom…
>Happy birthday! 30 was rough for me. After that, it was just another year. But I’ll probably have a major breakdown when I turn 40.And a topic? Write about anything you want. You never fail to make me laugh.
>Wait a minute. I think I actually have seven years on you.Double damn, girl!
>26 was a tough birthday for me because I remember my mom being 26. How could I be as old as my mom?! But now . . . I’ll be 40 in less than a week and I’m not quite sure how I got this old! Happy birthday! Some of the posted ideas sound really great–I’m looking forward to your choice.
>How about a blog on your views on steplife where you are now in life compared to when you first got married. In only a little over a year I’ve had the reality of steplife thrown in my face instead of the fantasy I had in my head when my hubby & I were dating & engaged, and we’re non-custodial!I’m on the other side, turning 30 this year. Funny, I have a similar view of somehow 30 making me “serious” as an adult. 🙂
>Hmmm…. here’s a topic for you: lurkers vs. stalkers. Something I’m dealing with at the moment.32 …. I remember it well. Kind of.
>The comment about parachute pants and fluorescent colors gave me an idea for a topic. What about fashion faux pas that were in style 32 years ago that are making a comeback but shouldn’t? Like the one piece terry cloth shorts outfits for women. Or Dr. Scholl’s Original Wood Sandal.
>Yeah, yeah. I’ll be 38 in August. What about ambushing the lead singer for Cinderella and persuading him to do a benefit concert for Bellevue Mall? (readers from outside of Nashville are now scratching their heads.) Although that pales in comparison to midget porn. And Happy Birthday, by the way.
>Here is a topic I would love to see you write about. I think the discussion on this topic would be outstanding. How hard is it to be a stay at home mom……..Yes, I know you will receive emails from people who work that will tell us how lucky we are to be with our children all day instead of with babysitters, but also I think it needs to be said that as sahm’s we struggle with meeting the dailey demands of our lives. Some of us often wonder if we are doing the right thing by staying at home?? We worry if all of our childrens needs are being meet to the best of our ability. A lot of us don’t have perfect little angels running around at home, a lot of us have children with special needs and behaviors. Has anyone ever wondered why womens health issues are rising?? It is because we don’t have the time nor babysitter to go get a breast exam or pap smear. I think this would be a perfect outlet to give advice on how to find resources to how to help your self if you are a stay at home parent who regularly feels overwhelmed and insecure raising children in 2007.
>Happy, happy birthday! Let’s see… how about a post about the beauty secrets women on television use? Since you were once on TV, maybe you have some great ideas for the rest of us?ORThe funniest/craziest story you ever reported on.
>Happy birthday, Lindsay! You’re entitled to feel blah… I hope this birthday surprises you by being not-so-bad after all… I hope the family spoils you, cuz you deserve it!
>I’d also love to know more about what the nitty gritty is on being a stepmom to your older girls. I’m also a full time stepmom, but I find the situation very rare where I’m from. I’d love to hear more about what kind of stages you went through in your relationship…do you ever want to ring their mother’s throat for being so uninvolved…etc?Of course, since people really know who you are, you might not be able to speak frankly about that stuff. A pen name/blog name can be an asset at times.32 is going to be a good year, just wait :)Anna
>HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
>I came back today to tell you “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” and let it be happy. There’s nothing you can do about getting older – just enjoy every day as it is. That’s very sad that the trolls pushed Brittney out. I often wonder if I’m strong enough to get through that. I really haven’t had any that were too bad, yet. At least they didn’t say the hateful things they said to her.As a step-mom myself, I’d like to hear about your “stepping,” too. I know so many people who fight out the custody and stuff and then I know very few who get along with BM. I’ve always wondered how your family came to be. But I would totally understand if you felt that pushed into the girls’ privacy – my kids and their friends will never know all the stuff I say about their mom on my blog! 😉
>You know – 32 was the birthday that didn’t do it for me. That was the one. I wasn’t looking forward to it, and felt relief when it passed. I just feel like I should have done more than I have by now – and the prospects aren’t looking pretty. But life is looking better now that that birthday is gone.
>Happy Birthday!Hope you’re enjoying your day!
>Topic – My 17 year old daughter just came to me about sleeping with her boyfriend. She said she wanted to discuss it with us first….AhhhhhhHappy Birthday!!!!
>30 was GREAT…36 was hard (felt like downhill). 40 was GREAT. We’ll see what else is in store! You couldn’t PAY me to go back to my twenties, although I’d love to have that body back. How about writing all the reasons to be glad you are no longer a twenty-something (other than the purely physical, of course!)Happy Birthday, and many happy returns of the day!
>I just turned 33…this was the 1st bday I wished would go away. I look at it as the 3rd anniversary of my 30th bday. Cheers to you & your special day from Chicago! Now, go eat a cupcake!! 😉
>Girl, I’ll be 32 in October. I didn’t like turning 30, 31 and won’t like turning 32. I feel like I’m halfway through life and it scares me. Sure, it’s not the way to look at things but it’s just who I am and how I see it. I still live as much as I can and don’t take things for granted, but that number hanging over my head is haunting. As for a subject to write about… how about trusting a completely anonymous stranger to pick you and your sweet baby up from the airport in July! LOL!I swear.. I’m on the level girl:)
>I turned 32 this April and it bugged me too. For all the reasons you said and a really silly one that makes complete sense to me: I am now older than there are days in a month. Here’s a topic for you: Would you let someone else nurse Bruiser? Would you nurse someone else’s baby? Most people are grossed out by the idea now, but what about in the day and age of “wet nurses”- it was the norm. What’s changed?I know I wouldn’t want someone else nursing my baby, but wouldn’t have a problem nursing someone else’s baby. Am I a weirdo? (Well, yes, but you probably got that from the fact that I’m upset about being older than there are days in a month.)
>I’m 38 and I haven’t yet had a birthday I wasn’t looking forward to. Presents! Cake! Did I mention presents? What’s not to look forward to?May your birthday be less blah in the living than in the waiting.
>Happy birthday!! **My topic would be Paris Hilton….whatcha think of all the mess?OR**Plastic surgery. If you could have any surgery at all (money not an issue)…what would you have done & why.
>Happy Birthday! My husband turns 30 today!!!!! You have much to celebrate. I thoroughly enjoy your blogs. Hope you have a great day!
>Happy Birthday. For the first time ever, I too am a little bummed about my b-day (34 this summer).Topic – how about getting carded? I got carded the other day ordering a beer and even though I don’t want to turn 34 or look/be old, it still annoyed me. My brother who is six years younger did not get carded. Hmm…maybe I’ll blog about this if you don’t.
>Happy B-day!I’ve never commented on your blog, but there’s actually something I’ve been wanting to ask you. I too am married to an older (divorced man.) He’s twelve years older than me, and I get all the ‘trophy wife’ comments, especially since he’s the editor of the town newspaper and his wife is the owner of a local inn. I usually just ignore it, or laugh it off, but lately I’ve been getting comments around our three year old twins, and I don’t know how to explain it to them. They know his ex-wife, as do I, and we have a very good relationship. They were divorced long before I came into the picture, and they have three older kids whom I love and love me.How do you deal with the ‘trophy wife’ stuff, and explain it to your daughter if she’s around?
>Happy Birthday!I’ve got 8 years on you…almost nine, as I also have a June Birthday. So far, my age has not bothered me. I guess it’s because I still feel like I’m in my 20’s.Topics? Hmmm….gotta think about that one.
>I’m with Busy Mom!!!
>No post ideas, but did want to say “Happy Birthday!”
>Thirty-two is the perfect age: old enough to be respected, not so old that you have to have it all figured out yet. I’ll be 32 in August. Looking forward to it!
