Hi! I'm Lindsay Ferrier. You might remember me from a blog called Suburban Turmoil. Well, a lot has changed since I started that blog in 2005. My kids grew up, I got a divorce, and I finally left the suburbs for the heart of Nashville, where I feel like I truly belong. I have no idea what the future will hold and you know what? I'm okay with that. Thrilled, actually. It was time for something totally different.

But I just used Bruiser to reel you in. The real subject of this post is this guy.
Some call him Chubby the Champ. Others know him as Double Denim. But I get to call him my father-in-law. He is, shall we say, an eccentric. An eccentric who, unless he’s wearing a silver sequined disco shirt, refuses to smile in family pictures. And so, as I’ve written before, I end up with timeless(ly bad) photos like these for Punky’s scrapbook.

And it looks like Bruiser’s scrapbook won’t be any different. Mr. Funny Guy came to meet Bruiser for the first time this weekend and left me with these (picture me behind the camera begging Gepetto to smile):
Even Bruiser’s looking at him like, What the hell? Some things never change. Including his shirt, by the looks of it.

>Precious! Just look at all that hair! (on both of them!!) Bruiser’s looking beautiful. Your FIL cracks me up…
>Bruiser looks just like his daddy, as you had predicted before. I think it is the eyes and the smile.Lindsay, I know this is probably a private matter, but I really commend you for raising your step daughters. What is your secret? How do you connect with them? You seem close. They seem to love you. Do they love you like a mother or like a friend/older sister? Isn’t tough to connect with teenagers as it is? Let alone being their step mother?
>That is one of the cutest babies I’ve ever seen. You’re blessed.Denise
>Hands down cutest baby EVER. And my in-laws not only will not smile in photos they won’t look into the camera! DRIVES.ME.NUTS. All of the family/wedding photos, they are looking off to the side, like they are eyeing a coupon for a buffet at Furr’s. Argh!
>Some people just don’t look good in pictures….but they still are very lovey-dovey.
>What an adorable little Buddha baby. Hysterical shots of your FIL. Mine never smiles either, but he has no teeth (I can’t believe I just admitted that to the whole internet).
>HAHA.I’m blinded by the cute baby. But seriously, at least he holds the baby for more than 2 seconds before tellling me he has gas.But the jacket? WHOA. Now that’s a doozy.
>Whoa. Awesome cute. And they baby ain’t bad either.Wait. That’s not what I meant.
>And here I thought my father-in-law was the one who never smiled in pictures! No disco shirts, though, so I still may be ahead.
>Look at that sweet boy! Aw, I just want to snuggle on him! (yes, I’m talking about Bruiser, not your FIL! 🙂
>Bruiser is Pinky reincarnated! Your FIL looks like Walter Matthau!!
>Awww. Those cheeks! And chin. And that JACKET! Eeeek. You really have a beautiful family Linds.
>Gepetto…how perfect a name!The Bruiser is cute as a button !
>Wow, Ms. B, you have a lot of questions! :)Some days as a stepmom are better than others, but the thing that’s helped most is not trying to live up to some stepmotherly or motherly ideal, but instead, trying to be the best “me” for them I can possibly be. So sometimes I end up being a mother-figure and sometimes I’m more of an older friend to them. Our family is very close and I am lucky.
>Golly! He is a Bruiser. He looks like he’s ready for the starting line up. Though probably better if he could walk first.
>Bruiser is so so cute! What a happy baby!Thank God you didn’t post that picture of your father-in-law in the disco sequin shirt first, though, or we’d be blind. 😉
>he is a DOLL-BABY!! and the baby is cute too!hahahaha..PRECIOUS little bruiser. seriously a cutie.
