>Our First Annual Back-to-School Feast
>Last year, I fell in love with Nie Nie’s blog.
One of her last posts before the plane crash was about the back-to-school feast she put together for her two oldest daughters. I resolved when I read it to do the same thing this year, when Punky started kindergarten.
And earlier this week,
I did.
This is the Ferriers’ Back-to-School Feast, with my compliments to the Nielsons.
This year, all three of our girls are in school. I made cards for each one…
…with this year’s theme inside.
Our 16-year-old’s card signified Junior year. (And I must admit, it was a pleasure to get out the “good” china, crystal, and silver as well. They don’t come out often enough.)
Each girl also had two tokens at her place, containing words unique to her own back-to-school experience. These are for my 16-year-old. My 18-year-old’s tokens said, “significant” “journey,” and my 5-year-old’s said, “courageous” and “unique.”
This, of course, was for our college freshman (who left this morning *sniff*).
The quote at the bottom says, “Hitch your wagon to a star.” It’s from Emerson, one of her favorite writers. She loved it.
I couldn’t resist these roses at the grocery when I was shopping for our feast. They were absolutely perfect.
On the menu: broiled lobster tails with drawn butter, medium rare steaks, and Strawberry-Basil Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette, which was AMAZING.
Oh. And we had Peach Cobbler for dessert.
I asked all of our feast celebrants wear tiaras. Fortunately, they complied.
At least for a few minutes.
I am so glad that Nie Nie gave me the idea for this new tradition. We had a wonderful night of togetherness, talking, and laughter. We ate very, very well and were in a fabulous mood at the end of the meal, from our five-year-old all the way up to our eighteen-year-old.
Let the school year begin!
