Hi! I'm Lindsay Ferrier. You might remember me from a blog called Suburban Turmoil. Well, a lot has changed since I started that blog in 2005. My kids grew up, I got a divorce, and I finally left the suburbs for the heart of Nashville, where I feel like I truly belong. I have no idea what the future will hold and you know what? I'm okay with that. Thrilled, actually. It was time for something totally different.

“Hey, look at this card we got,” Hubs said the other day, handing me a folded photocopy of a Christmas card.
I opened it. “Oh yeah, the ‘Don’t forget to tip us,’ card,” I said.
“Yeah, but look at it,” Hubs insisted. “Look what it said before they wrote their bit in.”
I paused and read aloud, “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! From your…. Trash.“
We laughed like two fifth graders.

>I’m always afraid if i don’t tip the trash guys – they’ll dump out the cans, or skip my house, or even worse – mix the lawn clippings with the soda cans.I don’t know about where are – but they don’t even get out of the truck here…the big crane-type arm lifts the barrels and dumps them.I am supposed to tip them for driving the truck??
>at least they sent a card! Here they try to bully you and if you dont pay up, they wont haul off your tree carcass !
>I’m glad I don’t have to answer questions like the “Does God have a mommy and daddy” question; I think my siblings are more relieved none of my nieces and nephews have asked me that (they know I’ll make up something).I must have uncultured trash; it’s never sent me a Christmas card. But, I live in the West, where trash tends toward ill-mannered, but not arrogance. Perhaps it knows me well enough to know such a card will wind up….in the trash 😉
>Ha ha! We totally pay up! With four kids, we are CONSTANTLY over our trash limit, and they always, always take it anyway. We suspect it’s because of the Christmas tips! 😀
>I haven’t gotten a card from my trash guys, but I did get a card from the contractor who did our living room windows. I think he just wants more money from me.And 5 year olds are equally hilarious. I laugh at least once a day from something mine says, lol.
>Actually, it sounds kind of nice. We have had no festivities here. No caroling, no cookies, no egg nog, no parties. It’s not very Christmas-y this year for some reason.
>My bride is from NYC. Up there, “Tis the season to be tippy!”Everybody gets a tip at Christmas up there and there are even tipping guides published in the newspapers some years.I mean we tip our hairdressers, cleaning person, lawn guy, give a gift to the teachers, assistant at work, but in NYC it’s almost like there’s a shakedown going on. Indeed, when my dad was sick and we forgot to tip the paperboy, he withheld newspapers randomly, and 3 months later after our 4th or 5th complaint, he, a 9th grader, finally said, “I hate to bring this up, but some days I don’t get enough papers and the people who didn’t tip me are the ones I short!”When we lived in your neck of the woods, we taped their tip on the trashcan along with a hermetically sealed sack of homemade cookies. Our trash guys were good guys who took all of our ridiculous amounts of trash, even the bags that didn’t fit in the can. We, of course, paid their company for their service and had a choice.Since we moved to the so-called urban overlay, we do not have trash collection choice (kinda like school choice but affecting more people in our zone) and its automated, so there is one guy IN the truck, who never gets out to get extra trash (Thank God Christmas is the day after trash day, so I have extra space). I, have no way of logistically tipping him, because he can’t get out of his truck to get it.
>That card IS funny! We got a “don’t forget to tip us” card from our trash men too only, I didn’t realize that’s what it was until you mentioned it. When I lived in The City, the trash was picked up by City Workers and we never got such cards…live and learn. I am the person who won the Santa call and he called last night. My four year old was gobsmacked! I don’t think he’s been speechless for that long since before he learned to talk. Yes, those four year olds DO keep a person laughing! Thanks for holding the contest, we really enjoyed our prize…BTW, it was a $60 gift card! We got both recordings AND the phone call. Thanks!
>that is just ridiculous!! Surely if you have to ask for a tip then you don’t deserve one?
>OMG, I just spewed tea all over my laptop! Punky is hilarious!
>Merry Christmas Ms. Ferrier, and to all Your Family as well.I think…You need a Pajama Christmas. My wife created it 4 years ago. Since we are the ones with the little kids. Christmas is at our house. We stay in PJs all day. Have limited low-maintainance family (my-in-laws) come visit. We eat, drink, relax, eat, drink, repeat until night-time. End with a family movie night. At 3 in the afternoon, we take turns showering and go back into clean PJs. It’s the most relaxing Christmas one can imagine.Outside visiting is done on Christmas Eve or after the 25th. This year we have a bonus, last minute plan changes gave us Christmas Eve off too. Pajama Christmas starts when I get off work at 2 p.m.
>The AT&T guy came to fix our phone line. We could call out and the DSL worked but no one could call in. In addition to fixing the problem he gave me an electrical engineering/physics lesson. We offered to tip him and he refused.
